Wicklow Maritime is a hobby website, which went live on the World Wide Web on 1st January 2003. The aim was to have a photographic diary of maritime activity at Wicklow port and share it over the internet.
In the early days, the site was a simple template webpage with five pages. The photographs were scanned prints, converted to Jpeg format before being uploaded. Later the site moved to an Eircom Homepage free account and Microsoft Frontpage software editor was used to format pages.
In 2007 the website moved to the domain www.wicklowmaritime.com. The more advanced Dreamweaver software was used to format the pages. The transition to move away from 35mm film and use digital DSLR photography occurred in 2009. This made the process of preparing and uploading photos easier. Over time Broadband became more widely available, and the slower Dial up connection was phased out.
As the website evolved, rail and aviation pages were added. Today the site is hosted by a Hostpapa located in Canada, they are easy to deal with, and the support is great. For any WordPress problems YouTube is my go-to for their excellent online tutorials.
Crew
The website was created and run by Tommy Dover, an amateur photographer with over forty years’ experience and a lifelong maritime enthusiast.
Max and Mitzi were our Mascot for many years, and accompanied us on our walks around the harbour and its environs. Sadly no longer with us today, they remain deeply embedded in our memory.
We hope you enjoy visiting the website and please check out our Social Media pages.
