Bluebird – One of the ‘Little Ships’ in Wicklow Bay

One from the 1991 Wicklow Maritime Archive
The Bluebird at anchor in the bay on Sunday 21 July 1991, while following the Tall Ship’s Race Leg from Cork to Belfast.
The Yacht built in 1931 was owned briefly by land speed record holder, Sir Malcolm Campbell.
But the yacht is better known as one of the ‘Little Ships’ that took part in the Dunkirk evacuation, code-named Operation Dynamo, also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, which resulted in the evacuation of over 338,226 BEF and French soldiers during World War II from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in northern France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940.
Today the yacht is named Bluebird of Chelsea.
